back to Dawson City
Here I sit tonight in a little hotel bar with wi-fi in Dawson City again.Have not had internet access since we took off for the arctic circle 2 days ago.we had heard all sorts of tales of the dificulties encountered by dummies trying to get up the Dempster on 2 wheelers...Turned out not to be terrible. When we first hit the Dempster a big sign in red says"no emergency services available for next 400 miles"......hmmmmmm.Guess that means we are on our own.Every thing was just swell for the first 200 miles. It is indeed dirt/gravel but fairly well maintained, not too rough and we could safely maintain 50 mph.Scenery fantastic, great ride.I was thinkig"my grandmaw could do this on a Vespa." Problem is there had been rain the night before as we neared Eagle Plains.I was in front as we crested a hill and noticed the road surface ahead looked darker. No biggy...wrong! I hit the mud at about 50 and immediately realized I had about as much traction as the proverbial owl excrement.I"m sideways, hanging on and trying to signal the guys behind but I think they had already figured out there was trouble.Everybody hit the mud and for a a brief moment fur flew ,but nobody dumped it. Skill and cunning prevailed.
