dark...

so,we are headed south, not real sure where we are since we do not have good US maps, lots of Canada and Alaska but no US, and it is dark as a stack of black cats.Pawndogs dash informs him he will soon be a pedestrian if he does not get get fuel soon.We come to a T in the road.Sign says go right to Jackson Hole, left to DuBois, but no mileages given. We know Jackson is at least 30 miles so DuBois must be closer. We go left, ride 10 mi. and sign says "DuBois 52 mi." But we catch a break when a gas station appears and we fuel up...Pull back on the highway and sign says "construction next 20 miles". Dang it! It's dark,it's getting cold ,we're semi-lost , there is no other traffic and now we are on a dirt/gravel road.I'm in the lead and because of the luggage strapped on the back of my bike ,my head light shines in the trees, not on the road.We ain't happy, but this is an adventure, right? We bounce along the gravel for many miles, trying to stay on the road and upright, and finally get back to pavement.I look way down the road and see a big yellow 8. Must be a mirage. Nope! It's a Super 8 Motel in the middle of nowhere, and they have just 2 rooms left and most important...Wi-Fi...and here we are.(491 mi.today)............boog

I read your entrys every day and am enjoying the pictures. Glad you're having a great trip. Things are quiet here @ ENT since you've been gone!! No one else here for me to pick at! Be careful and watch for cars with red or blue lights on top

We've been enjoying your daily commentary and pictures. Hope to see more pics when you get back. Sounds like you're having a great time--a prelude to retirement?! Mondays sure are boring at afsc. Safe journeys, see you soon. cb

excerpt from July 24th Anchorage Daily News:

http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/wildlife/bears/story/9159529p-9075312c.html

"A bear waiting for its chance to cut through traffic on the Seward Highway this weekend looked twice but still darted through a group of bikers, and the resulting domino effect sent one biker to a Seward hospital.

The black bear walked onto the shoulder near Cooper Landing at about 11 a.m. Saturday and paused at the roadside while the first few in a group of eight bikers passed going south, Anchorage motorcyclist Randy Hames said. But before Hames could get his own Harley Davidson past, the bear decided to sprint for it.

"I thought it was a dog because it was not very big," Hames recalled. "It paused and then went zipping across the road, and that's when things got exciting."

A biker in front of him veered and stopped, and Hames almost avoided a crash too until he was clipped from behind by Anchorage rider Michael Sweet's bike, he said. Sweet, 48, suffered injuries to his head, neck, arms and legs, according to Alaska State Troopers. Witnesses said he appeared to have broken his collarbone and a wrist, but that he was wearing a helmet.

Hames, Sweet and a third rider, Gilbert Wilson of Anchorage, all went flying from their bikes. One of those bikes ended up under an oncoming Dodge Ram pickup driven by Tim Lebling. Hames said he and Wilson were banged up but OK."
