more Alcan Highway
The road was the first built through western Canada to allow vehicle access to Alaska for military vehicles in 1942.Was built by US military then deeded to Canadian Government in exchange for the right-of-way.If you look on a globe you will note that Japan is actually not to far from Alaska and in fact Japan attacked and occupied the Aleutian Islands during WWII and had to be driven out by the US military.Obviously overland access was important.Story goes that an army engineer with his transit walked thru the woods followed by a parade of D-9 Cats and pointed to where he wanted the highway to go.For decades the road was dirt and gravel, but little by little almost all the road was eventually paved.Today it is a very nice road. The right-of-way is cleared back to the woods.for 40-50 feet on both sides giving good visibility, which is a good thing for two reasons. One,this area is teaming with wildlife and the visibility keeps them from being able to bound out in the road unseen by traffic. Two,nice wide meadows are running along each side of the road and the animals browse there in full view of travelers...cool,really cool...boog
