After our heart rates dropped below 150 we assumed a more realistic approach to this road and continued on but at a much reduced rate.We slithered along defensively just trying to stay upright for the 20 or so miles into Eagle Plains. That was seriously slick mud...but we made it to Eagle Plains, basically a turnout in the road with lodging, fuel ,a diner and a helicopter pad.Helicopters were in and out around the clock servicing oil and mineral exploration crews. We checked in (they made us take our boots off at the door) ate, and sought a weather report. The condition of the road had become a big issue for us.Weather report:" no more rain".Good,we will arise early and forge ahead to Inuvik in the AM.Well, it rained all night and much of the next morning.Road was a quagmire. We waited impatiently, rained stopped, off we went with fear and trepidation.Road was apparently coated with silicone grease but after 7 miles it abruptly was dry and there was rejoicing all around. We easily made the Arctic Circle and reveled in our accomplishment.Lots of pictures...Now we know how admiral Byrd must have felt. The dang mosquitos at the Arctic Circle are the most voracious we have encountered so far................
